Your Renovation Timeline: What to Expect From Start to Finish

Renovating your home is exciting; but let’s be honest, it can feel overwhelming too. Whether you’re doing a bathroom remodel, adding an in-law suite, or upgrading your entire main floor, most Halifax homeowners ask the same question: How long is this going to take?
At Han-Cor Construction, we believe in clear expectations, honest communication, and a step-by-step approach that helps you feel confident from day one. So here it is; your renovation timeline, broken down from start to finish.
1. Initial Consultation (1–2 Weeks)
Everything starts with a conversation. We’ll meet with you to talk about your goals, budget, timeline, and any unique needs for your space. This is where you bring your ideas, and we offer expert guidance based on what’s realistic, doable, and permitted in HRM.
Expect to discuss:
What you're hoping to renovate (kitchen, basement, etc.)
Style preferences or inspiration photos
Budget range
Scheduling needs (tight deadlines, flexibility, etc.)
2. Design & Planning (2–4 Weeks)
Once we’ve nailed down the scope, we move into the design phase. For smaller renovations, this might be as simple as floorplans and finish selections. For larger jobs, we may loop in engineers, draftspeople, or architects.
At this stage:
We finalize layout plans
Help you select materials (flooring, tile, fixtures, etc.)
Begin checking code and zoning requirements
Prep permit documents if needed
Don’t worry; we’ll walk you through every option. You don’t have to make all the decisions alone.
3. Permits & Approvals (2–6 Weeks, Depending on Project)
Some renovations in Halifax require permits through HRM (Halifax Regional Municipality). These can include:
Structural changes
Additions
Electrical/plumbing work
Secondary suites
We’ll handle the paperwork and keep you updated on approvals. Permit timelines vary depending on complexity and HRM processing.
4. Scheduling & Ordering (1–2 Weeks)
Behind the scenes, we’re lining everything up: sourcing materials, locking in subcontractors, and building your schedule. We won’t begin until we’re confident we can keep things moving smoothly once we start.
What’s happening:
Your materials are ordered
Your start date is confirmed
You get a clear day-by-day outline of what to expect
5. Demo & Prep (2–5 Days)
Time to make some noise! This is where the old stuff comes out; walls, flooring, cabinets, you name it. We make sure your space is properly sealed and protected before construction starts.
If needed, we’ll bring in bins and coordinate debris removal so you don’t have to lift a finger.
6. Construction (2–8+ Weeks, Depending on Project Size)
This is the bulk of your timeline and varies widely depending on what’s being done. A bathroom reno might take 2–3 weeks. A full main-floor remodel could run 6–8+ weeks.
During this time:
Framing, drywall, and structural changes are completed
Electrical, plumbing, and HVAC are installed (if needed)
Flooring, cabinetry, and finishes go in
Regular inspections and quality checks keep everything on track
We’re in constant contact with you along the way; updates are standard.
7. Final Touches & Inspections (1 Week)
Once everything’s installed, we do a thorough walkthrough with you. Any final tweaks or small fixes get wrapped up now; paint touchups, hardware, caulking, etc.
We also make sure all required inspections have passed and everything is up to code.
8. Move Back In & Enjoy!
The best part. Your new space is clean, polished, and ready for use. We’ll provide maintenance tips and answer any last-minute questions you may have.
Real Talk: Timelines Can Shift
While we do everything possible to stick to the schedule, renovation timelines can sometimes shift due to:
Delays in material deliveries
Permit processing times
Weather (for exterior work)
Unforeseen issues inside walls or structures
That’s why we build in buffer time and communicate openly if anything changes.
